CFG Update

I haven't written here in awhile. My Flippin Discs hat and my CFG hat have commingled and kept me very busy this year. So I decided to cross streams again with a recap of sorts and an update...kind of. What a long, strange trip it's been As we approach the holiday season, I wanted to give you an update, and I apologize in advance for a long post with no pictures. First, we’d like to thank our local players as well as any visitors to the area who have supported us during a very long 2020 and what has been an expedited 2021. I didn’t have time to do a mid-year update on sales as I had planned, but I might try to get to that during the next week or so. Here’s where we’re at, and what’s coming for the remainder of the year from us, and your favorite brands. Innova We order every other week from Innova. The East Coast warehouse limit is 25 discs per mold available (lately, about 4 different molds in one type of plastic.) The last delivery included a Champion I-Dye selection th

Purely Amateur Hour Here

My last two posts have been about pros on the horizon, the names to watch challenge the "one namers" on occasion on the top cards. Yeah. One namers. You know, like Paul, Eagle, Ricky? Yeah, those guys. But as I always say, more importantly, back to me. Enough pro stuff, it's back to Amateur Hour. Third time's the charm I played in my first Azalea Am in March of 2019, the normal time of year for this event. I averaged 17-over and 806-rated in MA3, finishing T15 out of 18. I averaged per round what the winner in my division shot for the entire event. It was only my second ever PDGA-sanctioned event, coming in at a whopping 789 rating, so overall, not terrible.   There were some updates to Castle Hayne during the end of that year and the beginning of the next. Mainly, the installation of short tees. I had suffered through the longs before, and decided that I wasn't going to play the shorts in my second go round. So I signed up for MA40, because I'm old,

March Madness came early

Normally, at this time of year, I'm spending hours in front of my computer, analyzing match-ups and plugging in numbers to my own formulas, measuring teams by their statistics. I'd be looking for one or two 12-seeds that could make a Cinderella run, trying to figure out how many 3/14 upsets I can get away with, and making sure I find that 2-seed poised for being knocked off by a 15. Last year was very disappointing, but understandable, having no NCAA Basketball Tournaments. This year, I doubt that I will put much time into many, if any, brackets. But we still got a little March Madness at Waco this past weekend. Picking up where I left off  I dare say that my words last week proved prophetic as I was searching for those fresh faces to root on, and go toe-to-toe with the established top players in disc golf. We got the usual suspects in the first round of coverage, both through the live DGN feed and the post-produced coverage from Jomez Pro and Gatekeeper Media. When the winds d

Dan Brooks-Wells is good for disc golf

I enjoyed watching a special preview of the upcoming DGPT season. It was satisfying to watch top-level professional players do the kinds of things that regular players (well, me anyway) have to think about when stepping to the tee. Things like, not being able to comfortably reach a basket and looking for a safe par option or long "soft run" potential; things like, am I better to gamble with the roller or take all the distance I can get in the air; things like, I wish my partner had played a better shot. Normal people problems. I am always excited about watching disc golf coverage. I want to see amazing, but I also want to see something kinda normal. I also enjoy watching normal people being great as well. It all came to me as I was watching the Green Mountain Championship coverage way back in September of the year which shall not be named... Imagine you travel to Vermont. You were here last year and you didn't cash. But this year, you're comfortable with

A little Skin(s) in the Game

I played in my first Skins Match on Sunday. I will start with this...I wasn't even supposed to be there. Let me take that a step further...I have never played as well I did at The Castle on Sunday. Never. Never, ever, ever. Maybe it was because, hey, I wasn't even supposed to be there. I'll set the stage... Called up  We have several local clubs in our area, and the New Hanover Disc Golf Club , has great members, leaders that care, lots of people that volunteer and love the game, and monthlies at both Arrowhead and Castle Hayne . The former is frustrating if you don't birdie everything or at least make pars, the latter, requires patience and your complete focus, else your head may explode. My parents were both teachers, so I'll put it this way: Arrowhead is like going to recess and Castle is like taking the SAT. And I wasn't signed up to take the SAT. Players in each monthly earn points based on their finish at each event. The top 4 finishers at the end of the

Top 25 Discs from 2020... a CFG recap

A wise man once told me that there's room for everyone in disc golf. So, I'm going to start 2021 on the right foot and get a solid post out there. Plus, we're going to cross streams, with Flippin Discs and Cape Fear Games . It worked for the Ghostbusters. Paved with good intentions It was a long year. In fact, 2020 felt like 3 years, and it was, a little bit. We were building the disc golf section of the store: adding accessories, working and re-working the rack, mixing in the lighter weights, and staying on top of special editions. We started our own Disc Golf Facebook group so we wouldn't flood the local group pages with restocks, and grew to over 200 members. We brought back Prodigy, going for a more user-friendly approach with low speeds and understable discs that weren't something we did well previously. The backstock was an issue, slow movers were moved out, and we were getting ready for the Azalea Am by building up safety stock, ordering a little heavier on
